“SMILE Festival”: Paying Tributes to Women Pioneers of the Time

On the evening of April 14th, as a closing ceremony of Smile Festival, a gala show titled “Salute to the Outstanding Women in my Mind was launched at the Tangdao Bay Multi-functional Hall, with a purpose of paying our respects to the excellent female figures of the time. The show was organized by the Youth League Committee of UPC and undertaken by its counterpart in our college. Shi Guoqing, deputy League secretary of the university, other Party secretaries and League secretaries from colleges and schools of our university, teachers and more than 100 students participated the activity.

Nine representative teams of over 60 students displayed their understanding about female pioneers. They displayed the heroic deeds of nine outstanding women in modern and contemporary ages, revealing female reverent qualities of “self-esteem, self-confidence, self-reliance, self-improvement”, conveying the positive energy of the new era.

The show consisted of forms of speech, stage play, dancing and multimedia demonstration. It vividly recreated postures and bearings of nine heroines including Deng Yingchao, the pioneer of Chinese women's movementZhao Yiman, a sacrificed heroine soldier in the War of Resistance against Japanese InvasionCao Zhi, the well-known Red Army mother in Jinggang MountainJiang Zhujun, a brave woman soldier in the notorious Refuse PitZhang Wenwei, a design master of modern energy industryQiu Jin, the heroine revolutionist born by the Jianhu Lake in Shaoxing city but sacrificed at the downtown area of Xuantingkou, and so on. The detailed and in-depth character depiction has reproduced the spirit of those popularized women figures to audiences at present.

Xu Longqian told a story of Chen Tiejun, the most beautiful bride on the place of execution, She said: Tie Jun, who grew up in a great turmoil and sacrificed her life at the age of 20, had experienced totally different life from us of the same age. We should enjoy ourselves in the this time of peace and stability, and our memories will never fade away.

Chang Chuang, a student from the School of Petroleum Engineering, said after the performance, “Xu Longqian’s interpretation of Chen Tiejun made me choke a few times. Tears filled my eyes. I could see that she infused herself into Tiejun in her story.”

Wang Rong, the scriptwriter of the stage play “Yu Yi--A Model of Teacher in the New Era”, said that Yu Yi reformed Sino-teaching by assuming a unique style, which reflects the insightfulness and innovativeness of time women.

As the closing work of the 20th Smile Festival, the show will inspire female college students to gain deeper understanding about self-esteem, self-confidence, self-reliance and self-improvement, which is also the requirement for women in the new era.
